Those of you who have been following the 'Native Brazilian Music' saga
since 2000 (see "Stokowski Stalked" <http://daniellathompson.com/Texts/
Stokowski/Stokowski.htm>) will be heartened by the news that the
Library of Congress has added the two 78-rpm albums, comprising 17
tracks, to its 2006 National Recording Registry.

Daniella,

Is there any chance these will be re-released to the public, or is it
just a matter of preserving them for posterity?

MJ,

Two European recording companies contacted me in the recent past,
expressing interest in reissuing 'Native Brazilian Music' on CD. One
label head was interested only if he could obtain the eight unreleased
tracks from Sony. Unfortunately, Sony was unresponsive.

Another label head was willing to reissue the 1942 albums but expected
to be sent the albums so that his sound engineer could digitize the
music. I wasn't about to part with my precious 78-rpm albums. I
directed him to a friend of mine in Europe who owns a set and also
happens to be an excellent record producer specializing in 78
reissues. The label head never contacted him.

Over the past several years I've been in contact with various
Brazilians who have attempted to negotiate with Sony. To date, nobody
has succeeded.

Now that 'Native Brazilian Music' is on the National Recordings
Registry, I'm contemplating getting in touch with the Library of
Congress to see if they might be inclined to ask Sony to give them the
unreleased tracks.

Daniella,

Let's hope your efforts are successful. It would be a public service
for the LOC to release these. If you think additional letters from
others would help, let me know.

On a completely different note, do you happen to know if Marcos
Sacramento will be performing in or near Rio during the month of
April? I will be there for three weeks and would love to hear him
live.
